エッセイ問題（TOEFL）に挑戦！
今日はTOEFLのエッセイ問題について、纏めてみました。障がい上、私はListeningやSpeakingが容易でないため、ReadingとWritingに焦点を当てて、勉強をしています。余談ですが、当ブログのアクセス解析してみますと、「英語」と「就職活動」に関するブログのアクセス数が非常に多いです。なるほどー。
学習教材にエッセイ問題（TOEFL）を選定した理由は、以下３点です。
①英語力の強化：Writing、Reading
②論理思考の強化：エッセイの書き方、論理思考
③学習の楽しさと継続性：課題が興味深く、互いに添削し合うことで飽きにくい。
用いた教材はこちら。Barron's Writing for the iBT。
上記の参考書はエッセイの書き方から、数多くの実践問題・模範解答が記載されてます。実践問題は、183問あります（笑）。
勉強の進め方として、週1ペースで進めてました。

- 相互添削と、模範解答のチェック
- エッセイの修正
この勉強を半年続けてみたのですが、やっぱり難しいです。
以下は、問題例と自分の解答です。
■問題例
Some people prefer to live in a small town.Others prefer to live in a big city.Which place would you prefer to live in? Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.
■自分の解答
Many people aspire to live in a big town, but I prefer to live in a small town. There are three reasons. I'll make a detailed explanation in the following paragraphs.
First reason is that I hate crowds in a big city. For example, a large number of people in a big city ride on crowded trains when they commute to work or school everyday. This leads to frustration since crowded trains is really uncomfortable. Some people commute to stand up for over an hour on the train. On the one hand, commute on trains in a small town is comfortable, because people are likely to get a seat on a train. It is important place for me to read a book or newspaper on the train, so I am eager to seat on trains.
Second reason is that prices in a big town are high. I am dissatisfied with groceries prices in a big town as it is hard to get freshness groceries with low price. In a small town, people can get freshness groceries with low price easily. What's more, food service and hair salon's fee is really high. People need to have sufficient money to live in a big town. As result, I prefer to live in a small town since I don't have sufficient money.
Last reason is that I like rural area. This is because it's healthy for us to breath the fresh air. Polluted air in a big town is bad for our health. Moreover, There are many beautiful mountains, sea and landscapes in small town. We can refresh our mind and body. Thus, rural area is good for physical and mental health.
In conclusion, I prefer to live in a small town. As I stated above, there are three reasons: Firstly, I hate crowded trains. Secondly, I am dissatisfied with high prices in a big town. Lastly, I like rural area.
■添削内容（一部）
2段落目で、This leads to はThis leads us toの方が良いと思います。・・・これは単に私の好みかもしれない。無くても分かるし。commute to stand up だと「立つために通勤する」となってしまいますから、適切な表現に直して下さい。seat は他動詞で「座らせる」なので、to be seated がよいでしょう。
3段落目で、prices は「何の価格か」言っていないのが気になります。 通じる気はしますが、一言二言言葉を補った方がいいと思います。と言いながら、私だったらwhen we buy something in a big city, usually it costs more. と言い換えますが。more のあと省略してますが、ここでは対比されているものが明確なので良いと思います。他は文法ミスで、groceries' prices, fresh, easily の位置、fees, as a result.
実際に自分の考えを英文で書いてみると、文法が如何に大事か痛感します。

最後に、エッセイ（TOEFL）の勉強をして良かったこと。
1点目（英語力の強化）：アウトプットすることで、Writing力だけでなくReading力も向上したように思います。2点目（論理思考の強化）：仕事から日常生活でロジックツリーの意識し、結論から述べる癖がついたように思います。以上から、学習目的に合っていれば、 TOEFLのエッセイ問題は学習効果が高いのではないでしょうか。
